Overview of Services

Large Federal defense sites are almost always contracted through the largest environmental consulting and engineering firms.  ERFS has Master Service Agreements with 15 of the top 20 firms in the United States.  ERFS has a long history of being a high performing team member on these large projects.

Kauffman and Minteer Superfund Site (KMSS – Unit 2) in New Jersey.  ERFS was successful in treating chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) in the 0.25-acre former source area of this Superfund site in Southern New Jersey. The site is a former truck washout facility where chlorinated solvents were rinsed into the subsurface. Soils are described as sand with silt and some clay, with abundant glauconite.  Groundwater is encountered at 16 ft bgs in the unconfined surface aquifer. Treatment was focused on the 10 to 35 ft bgs interval.  Nine Propagations with direct push drilling equipment and real-time monitoring completed the project under Pay-for-Performance contracting.

  ERFS installed Propagations and other injection hardware throughout a 30,000 square foot plume with this former military landfill.  The CVOC plume area was reduced to less than 10,000 square ft and significant source area mass reduction was achieved.  Anaerobic biological activity was used as second stage to complete closure.

  ERFS treated several acres of LNAPL jet fuel at an off-base spill area for the USAF.  ERFS conducted successful treatment in hundreds of injection wells.

Dallas NAS, CVOCs at Site ASA 5
– ERFS conducted source area remediation at this BRAC closure site after another US Navy contractor and subcontractor team attempted oxidizer injections and failed.  Previous subcontractors attempted to inject oxidizing solutions through open hole GeoProbe borings at the dense clay site which resulted in severe short-circuiting and surface expression of reagents.  ERFS installed our propagation injection points to form a wide-radius sand lens at the target depth and achieve broad area coverage at each injection point.  After multiple Fenton reagent injections resulted in partial treatment (60% to 75% reduction in CVOCs), ERFS shifted to permanganate injections.  Sampling indicated an overall 93% reduction in VOC at the site using permanganate treatments and supplemental injection points.
